Understanding the human layer of traffic
Tools In Future is dedicated to improving traffic flow by focusing on human behaviour – not just waiting for full automation. We study how small driver reactions and spacing decisions create stop-start congestion in real-world, mixed-vehicle environments. Through structured research and field pilots, we aim to stabilise traffic using behavioural insight rather than expensive new infrastructure. In simple terms: we work on the human layer of traffic.
A smarter way to smooth the flow
Most traffic solutions focus on infrastructure upgrades or vehicle automation, assuming controlled systems or widespread tech adoption. But real-world roads are mixed environments where human behaviour still dominates. Our approach targets the behavioural instability that creates phantom congestion. Instead of waiting for full automation or relying on costly expansion, we study and model how driver spacing and reaction patterns amplify traffic waves. We improve flow within existing road networks by focusing on the human layer.
